Frequently asked questions

What is Zig Sig?

Zig Sig is a premixed, colored terra sigillata that’s ready to use straight from the jar. It creates buttery-smooth, satin finishes on clay surfaces and is perfect for both functional and decorative work.

What firing range does it work at?

All Zig Sig colors are formulated for Cone 04 – 6. Always test on your specific clay body and firing schedule for best results. For best color results glaze fire to Cone 04-1

Do I need to burnish it?

Burnishing isn’t required, but it brings out that signature Zig Sig glow. You can also seal your piece with clear glaze or wax for a different finish.

Can I use Zig Sig on stoneware or porcelain?

Yes! Zig Sig works beautifully on earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. Just make sure your surface is clean and smooth before applying.

When should I apply it?

For best results, apply Zig Sig to bone-dry clay. If applied to bisque ware you may experience cracking and flacking off of the material.

How many coats should I use?

Apply 2–3 thin coats, letting each one dry to a matte finish before the next. Too thick and it can flake, too thin and you’ll lose that buttery sheen.

Is Zig Sig food safe?

Once sealed with a clear food-safe glaze, yes. Unglazed burnished surfaces are decorative only.

Can I mix colors?

Absolutely! All Zig Sig colors can be blended to create custom shades or layered for gradient effects. We always recommend testing any mixing before use on a finished piece. Due to material changes in the industry some colors may change overtime.
